Consider the difference between: "You can come if you want." "I want you to come if you can." At first glance, both seem polite and flexible. But let's unpack them: 🔹 "You can come if you want" – This phrase may seem open, but it can be interpreted as indifferent or non-committal. For someone with anxiety or who feels socially uncertain, this lack of clear invitation might reinforce feelings of doubt or rejection. 🔹 "I want you to come if you can" – Here, the message is clear: You’re valued, and your presence is desired. The focus is on the individual's ability to attend, rather than a vague invitation. This can provide reassurance and make people feel wanted and included. 👉 Small changes in our language can help create spaces where people feel more secure and connected. Thoughtful communication, particularly with those who may face social challenges, can make a world of difference in fostering inclusion. Hi everyone, happy Wed! This message is for anyone who is passionate about raising awareness of inequitable health care models in the workplace. Research is showing existing health care cover and benefits for companies are typically non inclusive, i.e. coverage excludes full spectrum women's health, fertility (male and female) and mental health (starting to see some movement here with the big players but still lacking overall). We (Blissmi) are trying to raise awareness that we need to close the gap on health care models in the workplace and as such are authoring a report called "100 voices" where we need industry practitioners and advocates ( *male and female* ) to shed light on where we can improve on collectively and stop corporates overlooking the importance of preventive, inclusive healthcare. One of the things I love about longform podcasts are the opportunity to go a level deeper in understanding great authors and their additional insights. James Clear, author of Atomic Habits does a lot of podcasts and I always learn something new, or gain a new insight from listening to him. In the podcast linked below he was asked what's the difference between people who make the most of their potential, vs others. His answer was simple, people make the most of their potential by the way in which they direct their attention. What's beautiful about the answer is how it's such common sense. We recently hosted our Org Health Speaker Series focused on career and professional development, bringing in Leaders, Subject Matter Experts and thought leaders to share their experiences across their career. We had an enlightening session with Miri Rodriguez from Microsoft, where she is a Sr Storyteller in the Health and Public Sector business. She shared valuable insights on the topic of "Building Your Brand with Storytelling and AI." Joe Borja was our moderator and Denise Clarke is our Leadership sponsor for our Org Health Team. Thank you for the opportunity, Degale Cooper. Each year, 4.2 million young people in the U.S. experience homelessness. LGBTQ+ youth are particularly vulnerable. Let the machines write for each other Writing my own words to communicate to another human being is a sacred act. My thoughtful effort and time investment demonstrate that I value to recipient. Generative AI’s writing capability threatens this social contract if we are not thoughtful about how and when we use it. Like many of us, I am figuring out where I draw the moral line. Spellcheck - seems harmless enough, although it isn’t helping to improve my spelling ability. Grammatical Structure – a helpful editor, but hard to ignore its stylistic suggestions. Outlining – good for structure, but is it influencing my writing too much? Brainstorming – bust that writer's block, but am I hurting my ideation skills? Generating content based off of what I previously wrote – a bridge too far for me when writing for another person. Where I have no concerns in using AI writing is when the audience is another machine. Search engine optimization is an area that I have started to leverage AI-generated content. Search keywords and meta content are rarely if ever read by a human. I want to use these features effectively, so why not let AI take on the drudgery to me? I prefer to devote my time to write so that I can be better understood by people as opposed to machines. There are many grey areas and each of us will need to decide on our own personal guidelines. Form filling is one of those grey areas. While form content may be “read” by a human, in most cases it is more accurate to say that it is processed. Another interesting example I came across recently is using AI to summarize a conversation that needs to have a written record. The value and human connection happen in the talk and AI takes on the role of scribe. While we try to figure out how to embrace AI writing, I’ll leave you with a parting thought. Reminder: it's still mental health awareness month. Breath work can activate the body’s natural relaxation response, reducing stress and lowering cortisol levels. Fire Victims* Uber and Lyft are providing vouchers for people to transport to and from shelters. Airbnb.org, in partnership with 211 LA, is offering free temporary housing for residents displaced or forced to evacuate due to the recent wildfires. You'll have to visit 211 LA's website and fill out a form. If you are in a better financial position, lots of hotels are offering disaster relief discounts. Planet Fitness locations in L.A. are offering anyone affected by the fires, including first responders, free access to their facilities, including showers. • Several restaurants including Calico Fish House and Blaze Pizza are providing free food to those affected by the fires. • Verizon will waive call, text and data charges for customers in hardest hit areas. They've also deployed free Wifi and charging stations at three wildfire shelters. The Los Angeles County ACCESS Center provides mental health services, information and referrals. Their number is 1-800-854-7771.lf you are having a more immediate mental health crisis, call or text the Lifeline support line at 988. *Ways 10 support L.A. Fire Victims & First Responders* Consider donating locally so your support gets to the people who need it most: 1. The American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles and The Salvation Army are providing essential shelter, supplies, and support services for those impacted by the fires. 2. The California Community Foundation's Wildfire Recovery Fund aims to offer relief to marginalized communities hardest hit by the fires. 3. Before I was a leadership coach, I spent 12+ years project managing complex software implementations & leading customer success teams. 📊 On my first big project at 24, I was responsible for the success of an entire healthcare organization's transition to new revenue-tracking software. Not only did the user experience have to be intuitive & accurate, but hundreds of employees needed to be trained, & when they turned on the new system, the revenue numbers needed to match the previous system's to the penny. 😳 To get this done, I had to: ⌚ Coordinate communication & tasks with 25 other coworkers across 10-12 other departments over the span of 18 months. 🤝 Collaborate with & hold accountable the client's team of 8-10 analysts & consultants. They did not report to me & weren't even employed by the same organization. (Oh, and did I mention they were all at least 10 years older than I was?) 💼 Report to senior financial leadership & client stakeholders, including building relationships with the CFO & VP of Finance. 💗 Manage my relationship with my own team lead & internal stakeholders. 🧠 Mentor & train junior employees new to the project, & manage my own direct reports. All of that adds up to a LOT of feedback given & received, time spent communicating, & relationship-building with people who I didn't directly control. I learned early on how important it was to build trust & credibility fast in order to get anything accomplished, much less meet ambitious deadlines & high expectations.
